PSV Eindhoven 4-1 Sparta Rotterdam: Match Recap and Result

PSV Eindhoven recovered from an early setback to beat Sparta Rotterdam 4-1 in the Eredivisie, Sven Mijnans completing a hat-trick after the visitors had led.

Match Summary

Sparta Rotterdam struck first at Philips Stadion. Milan Zonneveld scored after 15 minutes, Bas Kuipers with the assist, and the home side had to chase. Bruno Martins Indi was booked as PSV pressed for a way back.

The reply came in a first-half burst. Sven Mijnans equalized in the 23rd minute from an Esmir Bajraktarević assist, then Kodai Sano finished another Bajraktarević ball in the 39th minute to put PSV in front. The hosts took that lead into the interval.

PSV stayed on the front foot after the restart. Mijnans scored again in the 74th minute, Armando Obispo saw a yellow a minute later, and Mijnans completed his hat-trick in the 88th minute with Lutsharel Geertruida the provider. Sparta Rotterdam did not find another goal, and the official result was 4-1.

Key Moments

The early away goal mattered because it forced PSV Eindhoven to chase rather than settle into the contest. Turning the score around before half-time was the swing that set the rest of the match. Once ahead, PSV's hold on the ball left Sparta Rotterdam with little room to rebuild. Mijnans then closed it out after the break, his late finish from Geertruida ending any hope of a reply. Yellow cards for Bruno Martins Indi and Armando Obispo never changed the shape of the contest.

Match Statistics

PSV Eindhoven had 76 percent of possession and outshot Sparta Rotterdam 25 to 11, putting 10 attempts on target to seven. The home side also led the corner count 9-5. Each team received one yellow card, and neither was shown a red.
